Closing the Opportunity Gap for Black Males in Higher Education
Building Bridges Education (BBE) proudly leads the Black Male Excellence Initiative, designed to address the persistent opportunity and college enrollment gap for Black males—particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Our mission is to empower young Black men from Massachusetts to envision and pursue futures filled with possibility, purpose, and promise.Together, we are embarking on an exciting journey to empower young Black men through mentorship, fellowship, and expanded access to invaluable academic and professional resources.
Why It Matters
Nationally, the urgency is clear. Black male enrollment in higher education is on the decline. From 2010 to 2022, HBCU enrollment dropped by 11%, but for Black males, it dropped by 25% (American Initiative for Boys and Men, 2024). Only 32% of Black males aged 18–24 were enrolled in college in 2022 compared to 39% of Black females (NCES, 2023).

The Black Male Excellence Initiative seeks to increase the number of Black males attending and graduating from higher education institutions. We partner with colleges to provide real-life, transformational college experiences that not only shape student perspectives and aspirations—but also empower them to pursue their dreams with confidence and purpose.

Through intentional spaces of access and belonging, BBE is reshaping what’s possible for Black boys and young men across Massachusetts. We believe exposure, preparation, and belief are the foundations of success. Together, we are building a new generation of Black male leaders prepared to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.
